Can you believe that it’s been over a year since the pandemic closed things down and our Food Pantry opened every weekend? The support from you, our parishioners, has been incredible. 27 volunteers come in regularly—many come every weekend. We have had over 100 volunteers at one time or another—and a number of them are our middle school students. What an incredible way to put faith into action! Donations dropped off at St. Vitus are taken to the pantry daily by Vicki Bober and Jerry Benedict. (Jerry also coordinates our distribution.)
Our Angel Tree project traditionally collects Christmas gifts to enable adults and children in need to share in the joy we experience during Advent and Christmas.
Cooperation, sharing, seeing a need, responding. Over the past few months, we have had so many volunteers helping at the food pantry—some of them are our teens getting service hours, others just want to help when they can and some come week in and week out—it’s all such a blessing.
God is so good! I can’t imagine what it would be like to wonder what I am going to feed my family, or trying to decide if I buy milk or get powdered milk instead this week so I can buy x, y or z?! This is a reality for many people. They subsist on canned goods, never get fresh produce, vegetables, or dairy products. We take so much for granted. Thanks to so many, our parish is able to provide more than canned goods—each week we are providing meat, dairy, fresh fruits and vegetables as well as staples to enable a balanced diet. And, hopefully, money otherwise spent on food can be used to pay other essential bills.
Since March 14th, the Food Pantry has been open every Saturday to help those in need— whose numbers have continued to grow. In the month of June the average number of families served was 118.
