Sophie J. Duda, 103, of New Castle passed away the morning of Oct. 20, 2020, at UPMC Jameson Hospital. Sophie was born on July 23, 1917, in New Castle. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Rose (Folcik) Mrozek. She was married to the late John B. Duda. He preceded her in death on April 22, 1982.
Sophie was Roman Catholic and a member of Holy Spirit Parish, St. Camillus site. Mrs. Duda will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother by her family. Sophie was an avid gardener and enjoyed baking for her family. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and loved her puppy, Lexi.
Sophie is survived by her son, John W. (Judith) Duda of New Castle; daughter, Eileen J. (Andrew) Barnovsky of New Castle; six grandchildren, Ron (Judith) Barnovsky, Ruth Barnovsky, Cheryl (Jonathan) Duda, James (Sonya) Duda, Jeffrey (Amy) Duda and Scott Duda; two great-grandchildren, Mary Barnovsky and Case Duda; and a stepgreat-grandson, John (Britney) Ste Marie.
In addition her parents and husband, John, Sophie was preceded in death by six brothers, Alex, Frank, Stanley, John, Walter and Henry Mrozek; and three sisters, Helen Schwartz, Josephine Wrobel and Nellie Adams.
Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, 2020, at the Noga Funeral Home Inc., 1142 S. Mill St., New Castle. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, visitors are requested to wear masks and maintain social distancing protocols. A Blessing service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Deacon Dan Kielar of Holy Spirit Parish, St. Camillus site, will officiate. Rite of Committal will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Lord God, you are attentive to the voice of our pleading. Give Sophie eternal rest, O Lord, and may your light shine on her forever. Let us find in your Son comfort in our sadness, certainty in our doubt, and courage to live through this hour. Make our faith strong through Christ our Lord. Amen.
