Peter S. Petrella, 81, of Union Township passed away the morning of April 7, 2022 at UPMC Shadyside. Born on October 3, 1940 in Hillsville, PA, Peter was the son of the late Francesco and Angela Marterella Petrella. Peter is survived by his beloved wife, the former Judith Shaffer, whom he married on February 24, 1970.
In the early years, Peter worked in construction and was a member of Local 66 Operating Engineers. He then worked for Penn Dot as a heavy equipment operator until his retirement. He was a member of Holy Spirit Parish, St. Mary site.
Peter loved the outdoors, going hunting, fishing and riding his motorcycle. He also enjoyed working on things with his hands, especially on cars. A loving husband, father and grandfather, Peter’s greatest joy in life was the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Peter is survived by his children, Nicole Gilberg (Don), Michelle Orelli (Leo) all of Pittsburgh, Peter Petrella, Jr. (Anne) of New Castle, two sisters, Theresa Krawchyk of Kopple, PA, Frances McAnallen of California and eight grandchildren, Paige Gilberg, Bailey Gilberg, Mallory Gilberg, Logan Orelli, Lexi Orelli, Hayden Orelli, Neena Petrella and Rocco Petrella.
In addition to his parents, Peter was preceded in death by three brothers, Antonio, Joseph Petrella and John Petrello and three sisters, Rose Schweikert, Gina Vivelo and Adeline Castellano.
Visitation will be on Monday 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Ed & Don DeCarbo Funeral Home & Crematory, 941 S. Mill St. A procession will leave the funeral home on Monday at 1:00 p.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:30 p.m. at Holy Spirit Parish, St. Mary Church. Father Brendan Dawson will officiate. Entombment will be in Parkside Mausoleum.
Eternal rest grant unto Peter, O Lord. Let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
