Over recent years there has been a great deal of angst over climate change and what used to be called global warming. Even the Holy Father has expressed concerns over the environment. Many
political initiatives have strategized promoting electric cars and even electric airplanes! This has all been done with the view that the world is in jeopardy and we are responsible for the changes in
climate which are predicted to be catastrophic!
That being said, I believe the threats to the existence of the world are far greater when it comes to the attitudinal changes of people rather than the temperature of the earth! In the Gospel this weekend, Jesus reminds us to “give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” (Matthew 22:21)
Unfortunately, God, in our modern society, is the most marginalized being of all! The plots against Jesus continue and are even more fierce today. Christianity is being
persecuted throughout the world yet that is seldom reported. Even our own government fails to speak against the atrocities in Africa and South America. In the past few weeks, we have all witnessed the disgusting brutality of terrorism by those whose greatest enemy is the thought of peace!
Personally, I do not think it is the climate that is our greatest threat by any stretch of the imagination. I truly believe the greatest threat to humanity is the absence of God from the consciousness of our culture and society. Our political leaders and the political leaders of the other countries of the world are woefully ill-prepared for the challenge of the day. Few have
entered public service with altruistic ambition and motivation. The vast majority empowered today are so in their own interest and have proven that they will do anything to further themselves over and above the well-being of the rest of humanity.
We need to pray and sacrifice more than ever that the Lord will raise up moral and just leadership in all nations. The active hostility towards marriage, family life, the dignity of the human person and the attacks against religious freedom have gone on so long we are now seeing the effects of this debauchery!
Even so, there is always hope. Christ endured attacks and He overcame even the affliction of death itself. We place our hope and trust not in Caesar, but in Jesus Christ. May we never forget He is our Lord and Savior and we are all called to uphold his
teachings by the conduct of our personal lives.
Let us bring our children to Christ. Let us pray for strong marriages, faithful families, and courageous leaders both in the church and the civil governments of the world! Peace will only come when the Prince of Peace reigns in the hearts of all people!
