Nicholas C. “Engine” Zappia, 97, of West Pittsburg passed away the evening of April 13, 2021 at UPMC Jameson. Born on April 19, 1923 in New Castle he was the son of the late John and Florence Carangie Zappia. Nick was preceded in death by his beloved wife, the former Millie Tonsetic on February 22, 1994.
Nick had worked as a machinist on the B&O Railroad until he retired. He had proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during World War II with the 11th Airborne Division.Nick was a member of Holy Spirit Parish.Heenjoyed driving around his town of West Pittsburg talking to everyone he knew. A loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Nick will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Nick is survived by his children, Janet Zappia of West Pittsburg, Debbie Grafton (Harry) of New Castle, his daughter-in-law, Eileen Cearfoss (Dale) of New Castle, three grandchildren, Kiley Grafton, Aaron Zappia and Ryan Grafton (Kelly), two great-grandchildren, Jaxen and Jordan.
In addition to his parents and wife, Nick was preceded in death by his son, Ronald Zappia, two brothers, Carl and Bennie Zappia and one sister, Agnes Papa.
A private Blessing Service, officiated by Fr. Brendan Dawson of Holy Spirit Parish, will be held at the Ed & Don DeCarbo Funeral Home & Crematory, 941 S. Mill St. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform Military Rites at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Vitus Cemetery.
