Mary Therese Sovesky, 90, of Hunters Woods Boulevard, New Castle, passed away peacefully on the morning of April 3, 2020, at Shenango on the Green, New Wilmington. She was born on May 20, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois, a daughter of Lillian Wright and J. Arthur Mittler. She married Thomas V. Sovesky on Aug. 7, 1948. He preceded her in death in February 1997.
Mary graduated from New Castle High School in 1947. After graduating, she was employed by Bell Telephone Co. She also worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance as a rater in the 1970s. She belonged to St. Camillus Catholic Church since 1959. She was very involved in her church for many years as a Eucharistic Minister, CCD instructor, parish council officer, the bereavement chairman taking Communion to the sick at home and as a church greeter. She was also a member of the Christian Women's Association.
She was a member of AARP, PTA and was very active with her Red Hat Society, serving as the "Queen Mum" for the "Ladies of the Castle" Chapter. She enjoyed dressing up in her many red and purple outfits, going to luncheons and attending the yearly picnic in celebrating with her friends. She even painted her golf cart red and purple when she was asked to lead a community parade when she lived part of the year in Homestead, Florida.
She was active as a Girl Scout leader of Beaver-Lawrence Co. for 13 years. She was awarded Scout Leader in 1966. Her Troop 422 traveled to New York City to see the Rockettes and climbed the Statue of Liberty. Her troop also traveled to the Everglades in Florida. She was also a board member of the Hunters Woods Association, where she resided.
Mary Therese loved playing bingo, cards with her many friends, and especially going to the casinos on her birthdays. On her 90th birthday, she wanted to go to the Three Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh where she played the slot machines for many hours. She enjoyed flying to visit her children and great-grandchildren traveling to Wyoming, Oregon, Hawaii, and as far as Alaska spending time in Denali National Park. She will be greatly missed by her dear friends here in Pennsylvania and in Florida, where she spent many winters. She was a very social being and loved getting to know people. Her favorite things were butterflies, rainbows and red roses here on Earth from her patron Saint Therese, for whom she was named.
She is survived by her son, Gary and wife, MaryAnne Sovesky, of Charlotte, North Carolina; two daughters, Kathy and husband, Patrick Williams, of Palmer, Alaska, and Deborah and Steve Martin of Laramie, Wyoming; her sister-in-law, Donna Mittler of New Castle; six grandchildren, Nicole Justice of Wasilla, Alaska, Jason Grabowski and wife, Kathy Russell, of Wasilla, Alaska, Julee and Erik Herberth of Charlotte, North Carolina, Jordan and Caylee Martin of Cheyene, Wyoming, Isaiah Martin of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and Hannah Martin of Laramie, Wyoming; and seven great-grandchildren, Reece, Haidyn and Cade Justice, Jaydyn and Joseph Martin, Kenzie Herberth and Jack Conger.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Doris (Jim) Callahan of Hermitage; her brother, Jim Mittler of New Castle; and sister, June (Chuck) Faraone of New Castle.
Services are private. Interment will take place in Castle View Memorial Gardens, New Castle. The Noga Funeral Home Inc. has been entrusted with the arrangements.
