Marie Madelynn Lucarelli, 84, a former resident of Hillsville, PA, passed away on January 30, 2022 after a short illness. Marie was born on January 31, 1937, a daughter of Madelynn and Nicola Palumbo of Hillsville. On February 1, 1969, she married her husband, Gilbert Lucarelli, who survives.
After graduating from Bessemer High School in 1954, she went on to study at Carlow College, formerly Mount Mercy College, where she obtained her degree in Home Economics followed by her master’s degree in education at Westminster College. After graduation, she worked as a Home Economics teacher at Mohawk Jr./Sr. High School for 26 years. She was also active in the Home Economics Council. She stepped away from teaching to raise her four children and returned to teaching until 1996. She was inducted in the Mohawk Alumni Hall of Fame in 2016.
In addition to her time with her family, Marie was active in the Catholic church. She was an organist and served as president of Christian Mother’s at St. Lawrence Church in Hillsville, Pa. She, along with several of her dear friends, was instrumental in starting the baking of Easter Bread at the church for over 25 years. This still remains an active project today.
She also enjoyed attending weekday mass with her friends, followed by a group meal or shopping trip. She looked forward to the annual St. Lucy celebrations. She liked dancing at family weddings. She served as a poll worker at the Mahoning Township center for many years. She was a fan of watching sports and followed her kids and grandkids activities. She enjoyed talking to everyone and always had a smile on her face. She will be sadly missed.
Marie is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Peter, and a baby sister who died at birth.
In addition to her husband, Marie is survived by four children, Michelle McKain of Bethel Park, PA; Nicole Lucarelli of Arlington, VA; Maria Lucarelli of Columbus, OH; and Vincent (Catherine) Lucarelli of Ellicott City, MD. She leaves three grandchildren Geoffrey McKain; Eli Lucarelli, and Mazie Lucarelli whom she loved more than anything. They were the light of her life.
Visitation will be on Friday, 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Ed & Don DeCarbo Funeral Home & Crematory, 3000 Wilmington Road. Family and Friends are asked to meet on Saturday for a 9:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Spirit Parish, St. Vitus Church. Father Benjamin Bar will officiate. The family requests all in attendance for the visitation and service wear masks. Burial will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to Holy Spirit Parish, 910 S. Mercer St. New Castle, Pa. 16101. A bereavement luncheon will be held at a later date.
Eternal rest grant unto Marie, O Lord. Let perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
