Margaret “Peg” Russin, 85, of New Castle passed away early Wednesday morning, September 6, 2023, in her home. Peg was born April 12, 1938, in Youngstown, OH, a daughter of the late William and Margaret (Fee) Kennedy.
A 1956 graduate of New Castle High School, she also graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing, earning her Registered Nurse certification in 1958. Peg worked as a nurse for more than 40 years, and for more than 20 years, worked in various nursing capacities while caring for the patients of St. Francis Hospital in New Castle.
Peg was a longtime member of the Holy Spirit Parish, St. Mary site, where she actively volunteered in the kitchen for many church events, most notably for the church bingo, the Easter and Summer Fest, and as one of the “Pierogi Ladies.” She had a talent for sewing, especially cross-stitch, and also enjoyed working on jigsaw puzzles. Most of all, Peg loved going out to eat and spending time with family and friends, especially the annual Cook Forrest camping trip.
Peg is survived by a daughter, Pamela Sue Russin (John Larko), of New Castle; two sons, Paul “Dub” Russin (Timi), of Vancouver, WA, and Dr. Michael Russin (Danny Baker), of San Francisco, CA; and two grandchildren, Reid and Ty Russin; a brother-in-law, Wayne Eakin, of New Castle; and several nieces, nephews, a great-niece and two great-nephews.
In addition to her parents, Peg was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Eakin; and an infant niece. “Mama Russin,” as she was affectionately known by many, will be dearly missed for her unique sense of humor, quick wit, genuine nature, and loyal friendship.
Calling hours will be 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday (9-8-23) in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 111 W. Falls St., New Castle. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:00 a.m. Saturday (9-9-23) in St. Mary Church, 124 N. Beaver St., New Castle, with Rev. Ben Barr, as celebrant. Interment is at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Union Twp.
Eternal rest grant unto Peg, O Lord. Let perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
