Thank you to TJ Belsterling, our coordinator of Middle School & Youth Ministry. He hosted a fabulous, and first time ever, movie night on the lawn at the St. Camillus site. According to TJ: “It was a beautiful day, with volleyball, corn-hole, kickball, bocce ball, and yes, the movie! About 40 people came, from little ones and their parents to members of our youth group!” It was a wonderful opportunity for families and parishioners of all ages to come together and enjoy each other’s company.
These types of activities are so important for our new parish of Holy Spirit to experience. They are community-building endeavors. That is the whole point and purpose of our first annual Parish Picnic to be celebrated on September 12th at Cascade Park. I’m very grateful to all our wonderful leaders and volunteers who are planning this exciting time for us to gather. Among the highlights of the picnic are: Mass to welcome everyone, the Red Coat Band, the Dorals, Children’s & Adult Games, a Cornhole Tournament, a Car Show, Hayrides, Food Trucks, Italian Ice, Paint the Holy Spirit, Golf Carts to assist the handicapped—and other ideas still coming! If you want to be part of the grand design, contact Jean Pascale at 330-770-1635 or [email protected].
Once again, I am very grateful to Kathy Gabriel, Justin Venasco, and all of our adult, as well as teen, volunteers for this year’s first annual Holy Spirit Vacation Bible School. I was delighted to see 90 children come together to learn more about their faith and to experience friendship, love, and fellowship. Today’s pictures are from this year’s VBS. These and others will also be posted to the website at hsplc.org/photo-albums.
We need to find more and more occasions for our families and our children to experience the faith in a truly lived-out way. It’s not enough for us to gather once a week to worship the Lord. We all need to live the Eucharist that we celebrate! We are to truly become what we receive, the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. We cannot simply receive Him and then go about our lives as if He does not exist! The reason He has given Himself to us under the appearance of bread and wine—to be our food, our energy, our strength—is so we may also be Christ for one another in the way we live. All these efforts demand a lot of energy and time, but they bear great fruit by the grace of God.
Now is a good time for all of us to ask ourselves, “What am I doing in an actual and practical way to live the Eucharist I receive?”
On July 24th, we will celebrate the Feast of St. James the Apostle. He was the first of the Apostles to suffer martyrdom. We are blessed to have one of our seven churches named for St. James. As we continue to celebrate our patron saints of our church buildings, a 4:00 pm Mass will be held on Saturday, July 24th, at St. James the Apostle Church on Rt. 422 in Pulaski. There will be a small reception following the Mass that evening.
