Joseph Francis Cardella, 84, passed away peacefully at his daughter’s home in Pittsburgh on September 14. Born on December 12, 1937, in New Castle, he was the son of the late Peter and Mary Ann Cardella.
A lifelong resident of New Castle, he graduated from New Castle High School in 1955 and played trumpet in the marching band. A Veteran of the US Army, he honorably served his country as a Military Police Officer in Korea from 1956-1958.
Following military service, Joe returned to New Castle and married the love of his life, Patricia Elvera Cardella and they had four children. He graduated from Youngstown State University with a B.S. in Business Administration and worked as a Business & Finance executive for several industrial products companies and human services organizations such as Allied Human Services and Americare Management Corporation. He remained an active board member, and until recently, was a consultant for Disability Options Network.
While his children were growing up, Joe was a member of the New Castle School District School Board. He also proudly served as New Castle’s City Treasurer for 16 years until his retirement in 2018. Joe was a member of Holy Spirit Parish.
Joe’s passion was golfing and making golf clubs. He enjoyed many fun trips with his children to New York, California, and Las Vegas. He loved music ranging from the Bee Gees to the Duprees, and everything in between. He was a member of several social clubs, including the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the VFW, and others. Above all, Joe was a committed father who cherished his family and also his loyal dog, Dino.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 26 years, Patricia Elvera Cardella, and his eldest son Joseph Peter Cardella.
He is survived by four children, daughter, Linda Cardella of Pittsburgh, PA; daughter, Susan Cardella (Brett) of San Diego, CA; son, Daniel Cardella of New Castle, PA; and son, Michael DeCarbo (Ashley) of Hoboken, NJ. In addition to his children, he is survived by his sister, Beverly Cannon (Doug) of Concord, OH; his second and former wife, Patricia Elaine Cardella, of New Castle; and his longtime beloved companion, Jennie Guido, of New Castle.
Visitation will be held Monday from 11:30 a.m.to 1:15 p.m. September 19 at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, 941 S. Mill St. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform full Military Rites at 1:15 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. A procession will leave the funeral home Monday to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 2:00 p.m. at Holy Spirit Parish, St. Vitus Church, officiated by Father Benjamin Barr. Burial will be in St. Vitus Cemetery.
Eternal rest grant unto Joe, O Lord. Let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
