John P. Dzemyan, 98, formerly of South New Castle Borough, passed away the evening of Oct. 21, 2021, at St. Paul's Senior Living Center in Greenville, Pennsylvania. John was born May 21, 1923, in Humenne, Czechoslovakia , the son of the late John and Maria Pavlik Dzemyan. He was married to the former Dorothy M. Duda. She preceded him in death on Nov. 6, 2019. They were married for 69 years.
Mr. Dzemyan was a graduate of Shenango High School, class of 1941. Following graduation, John enlisted in the United States Army on Jan. 27, 1944, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. John served his country in the 405th Company E infantry and earned the rank of Tech 5th grade. He was involved in battles in Rhineland and GO 33 WD 45. John received many decorations and citations, among them where the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, the Purple Heart GO 24 HQ125, a Bronze Star and World War II Victory Medal. John was wounded in the Roer River battle on Dec. 2, 1944. John was honorably discharged on May 22, 1946.
John was Roman Catholic and attended Holy Spirit Parish’s St. Vincent de Paul Church. John was a former member of St. Michael's Church and was a member of the choir. He also sang with the barbershop quartets and at the Eintracht Singing Society. He was a longstanding member of the Slovak Club and the American Legion Post 343 in New Castle. He loved to spend his summers gardening, and falls going hunting with his family.
Mr. Dzemyan retired from Packard Electric as a tool and die maker. He previously worked as a tool and die maker at the former Johnson Bronze Company in New Castle.
He is survived by his three children, John P. (Holly) Dzemyan of Smethport, Pennsylvania, Daniel (Susan) Dzemyan of New Castle and Patricia (Timothy) Lockley of New Castle; a sister, Margaret (James) Basista; nine grandchildren, Alexis (Frank) LaFuria, James (Julie) Tomasovich, Michael (Sarah) Tomasovich, Scott (Julie) Dzemyan, Russell (Jenette) Dzemyan, Josiah (Eileen) Lockley, Katherine (Ben) Lockley, Justine (Trevin) Dear and Danielle (Alex) Rohal; nine great-grandchildren, Isaac LaFuria, Max LaFuria, James Tomasovich, Edward Tomasovich, Alexandrea Dzemyan, Chase Dzemyan, Elyse Dzemyan and Louis Tomasovich and Samantha Tomasovich.
Mr. Dzemyan was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; parents; daughter, Cynthia Tomasovich; stepmother, Anna Zidow; two brothers, Steve Dzemyan and Michael Dzemyan; and sister, Mary Fechko.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, 2021, at the Noga Funeral Home Inc. 1142 S. Mill St., New Castle. A procession will leave the funeral home at 10 a.m. Monday for Holy Spirit Parish, St. Mary Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Brendan Dawson, parochial vicar of Holy Spirit Parish, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
