John Joseph Schultz, 81, passed away June 1 in the company of his children. John was born March 15, 1941 in West Pittsburg, PA to Julia and Joseph. At Slippery Rock, he met Ann (Fleckenstein), his wife of 58 years.
From childhood, he had a keen mind, a quick wit, a strong will, and a sense of justice. John had a lifelong love of horses and in his youth rode competitively, winning many ribbons. He was 80 the last time he rode. He attended Slippery Rock and then Westminster to earn his master's degree in teaching. John taught English and Remedial Reading for over 30 years in the New Castle School District. After he retired from teaching, he worked for the Pennsylvania Federation of Teachers. He fought for fair working conditions for teachers and better education for students. John was invited to the Governor's Mansion in recognition of his work in education. For his whole life, former students would stop to thank him when they saw him.
Whether camping, fishing, boating, or simply gathering around a table to eat and laugh, John loved spending time with his family. After retirement, he bought a motorcycle and enjoyed riding with friends and son. John found joy in every small victory of his children and grandchildren and offered loving support through every struggle.
John was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Ann; sons, Joseph (Tony) and John; daughter Jennifer Stalnecker; grandchildren, Joey, Jack, and Brendin; sister JoAnn; brother James (Jane); and numerous nieces, nephews, and their children he loved very much.
Visitation will be on Monday 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Ed & Don DeCarbo Funeral Home & Crematory, 941 S. Mill St. A Blessing Service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. Father Benjamin Barr of Holy Spirit Parish will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.
