James F. (Hike) Heichel, 76, of Union Township passed away the morning of February 14, 2023 at The Grove in New Wilmington. Born on April 15, 1946 in New Castle, Hike was the son of the late Frank and Stella Dudek Heichel. On April 13, 1967, Hike married the love of his life, the former Janet Malizia. Janet preceded him in death on October 30, 2014.
Hike worked at Youngstown Sheet & Tube and then worked at McClure Johnston/Beacon Roofing Supply until he retired. He was a member of Holy Spirit Parish. Hike was an avid Pittsburgh Steeler and Pirates fan. He enjoyed being in the outdoors going fishing, hunting and spending time at his camp. A loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Hike’s greatest joy was the time he spent with his family.
Hike is survived by his children, Richard Heichel of New Castle and Michele Ross (Mark) of Flint, MI; two brothers, Jerry Heichel (Patty) and John Heichel all of New Castle; and one sister, Mary Lou Magusiak (Andy) of New Castle; two grandchildren, Ashlee Ross and Lauryn Ross and two great-grandchildren, Peyton and McKynlee.
Visitation will be on Friday, 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Ed & Don DeCarbo Funeral Home & Crematory, 941 S. Mill St. A Blessing Service will be held on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Deacon John Carran of Holy Spirit Parish will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Eternal rest grant unto Hike, O Lord. Let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
