Irene Catherine (Russo) Scaramazza, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend, passed away on November 3, 2021, at the Good Samaritan Hospice in Cabot, PA. Irene formerly resided at North Mercer Street in New Castle. Born January 28, 1928 in New Castle, she was the daughter of John J. and Theresa (Izzo) Russo. She was preceded in death on November 22, 2003, by her husband of 56 years, Dominic Scaramazza, whom she married January 25, 1947.
Irene was a wonderful mother who dedicated herself to raising her five children and five grandchildren. She was an excellent cook, called Bingo at St. Mary’s and was an avid reader.
She is survived by three daughters, Irene Scaramazza of Columbus, Ohio, Jan (Paul) Kwiat of Estero, Florida and Nancy (Ted) Kitson of Harmony, PA; one son, Paul (Cindy) Scaramazza of New Castle; two brothers, Father Francis Russo of Washington, DC and Vincent Russo of New Castle; five grandchildren, Jamie, Jessi, Andrea, Cody and Natalie; and four great-grandchildren, Ava, Aria, Remi and Raphaela.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Dominic “Buddy” Scaramazza; two sisters, Mary Calabrese and Rose Evanoski; and two brothers, Father Reginald Russo and Anthony Russo.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 6, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Saturday at 12:30 at Holy Spirit Parish, St. Mary Church, with Father Benjamin Barr officiating. Private burial will be in St. Lucy Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc.
