Garland L. (Ace) Houk, 100, of Lynn Street, New Castle, passed away the afternoon of May 10, 2023 at his residence. Garland was born March 5, 1923 in Ellwood City. He was the son of the late Charles L. and Clara E. (Cunningham) Houk. Garland was married to the late Mary M. (Stoga) Houk. She preceded him in death on March 20, 2010.
Mr. Houk was of the Roman Catholic faith and a member of Holy Spirit Parish, St. Joseph the Worker site. Garland was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Ellwood City, class of 1941. He served in the United States Army as a Sergeant First Class. Garland worked for US Steel in Ellwood City for 33 years in the fuel lab. Upon his retirement from US Steel, Garland worked for 10 years with the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare in New Castle. Garland’s hobbies included bowling, fishing, and traveling.
Mr. Houk is survived by three sons, James E. Houk of New Castle, Robert J. Houk of Boise, ID, and Richard M. Houk of New Castle; and two grandchildren, Brenna Houk of Boise, ID, and Sebastian Houk of Quantico, VA.
In addition to his parents and wife, Garland was preceded in death by his three brothers, William, Leslie, and Harold Houk.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 16, 2023, from 10:00 am to 12 noon at Noga Funeral Home Inc. 1142 Mill Street, New Castle. A procession will leave the funeral home at noon for Holy Spirit Parish, St. Vitus Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial and Rite of Committal will be celebrated at 12:30 pm. Rev. Benjamin Barr, Parochial Vicar of Holy Spirit Parish will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Eternal rest grant unto Garland, O Lord. Let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
