Edward Valentine Ellison, 101, passed away Feb. 23, 2021, at UPMC Jameson Care Center. He had been living in his own apartment at Jameson Place for one year prior. Born on Feb. 14, 1920, in New Castle, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Robert Thomas and Mary (Withers) Ellison. He was married to the former Mary Agnes Nelson for nearly 60 years. She preceded him in death on April 8, 2002.
Edward enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944, and was stationed throughout the United States as an Aviator Machinist Mate III during WWII. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 343 in New Castle.
Ed was a member of St. Joseph the Worker site, now Holy Spirit Parish, where he served as an usher for many years. He belonged to the Holy Name Society and enjoyed being involved in numerous church activities.
He was retired from Pennsylvania Engineering Corporation, where he was a welder. He could fix anything from cars to household repairs. From 1951 to 1954, after a hard day's work at the mill, he built the family home in Shenango Township, on his own. It was soon filled with love and laughter.
In his younger years, he was an avid swimmer and enjoyed riding bicycles as well as motorcycles. He was a tech-savvy senior citizen. He spent hours reading the news of the world, playing games and Skyping with his children on his tablet.
He is survived by a son, Edward R. (Betsy) Ellison of Miamisburg, Ohio; daughters, Barbara J. (Don) Young of Sparks, Nevada, and Suzann M. (Tony) Bennett of Reno, Nevada; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, Mary, Edward was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Ann Poloka; brothers, Robert, Harold and Richard Ellison; and sisters, Dorothy Gibson and Helen Ellison.
Following Ed's wishes, there are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at noon on Friday, April 9, 2021, at Holy Spirit Parish, Mary Mother of Hope Church. Father Anthony Sciarappa, parochial vicar, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Local arrangements were entrusted to the Noga Funeral Home, Inc. 1142 S.
