Once again, my sincere gratitude to everyone who volunteered to make the Best of the Fest truly the Best! I am also very grateful to all of our participants from the community who came and enjoyed not only delicious food, but also friendship and camaraderie. Speaking of friendship, I would like to acknowledge this coming Wednesday as a special holy day. August 17th is Deacon John Carran’s birthday! So congratulations to Deacon John and to his lovely wife, Robin and their sons, Jonathon and Matthew.
Some of the clergy are a little shy about their birthdays, but I think it’s important for our parish family to know. Fr. Barr celebrated his birthday on May 21st and Fr. Brendan had his birthday on July 20th. Our seminarian, Dan Roberts, quietly celebrated his 43rd birthday with his lovely parents and that was on July 16th. We are very blessed in our parish to have two Religious, both Sisters of St. Francis, Sr. Annie was born December 31st and Sr. Veronica on February 9th. Of course, there is another date in the life of our clergy and religious that would be appropriate for you, as the parish family, to know—that would be their date of ordination or their date of religious profession. Deacon John was ordained June 11, 2011; Fr. Benjamin Barr on June 24, 2017; and Fr. Brendan Dawson on June 29, 2019.
Another family member of Holy Spirit Parish has been recognized for service to the community—Cpl. James Hoyland of the New Castle Police Department. On July 27th the New Castle News reported that the Pennsylvania Association of School Resource Officers chose New Castle Police Cpl. James Hoyland as the state’s Sergeant Mike Hayes School Resource Officer of the Year for 2022. Cpl. Hoyland received the honor at a school safety conference in Harrisburg last month. Cpl. Hoyland is a school resource officer for the Lawrence County Career and Technical Center and also heads the Laurel School District’s police department. He has been a full-time patrolman with the New Castle police department for 16 years, and works part-time for the Bessemer police department. Congratulations and thanks to Cpl. Hoyland for a job well done.
