Alphonso E. DeVivo, 73, of New Castle, passed away peacefully the afternoon of Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at his home. Mr. DeVivo was a lifelong resident of New Castle. He was born March 12, 1947 to the late Alphonse and Stella (Suchy) DeVivo.
“Al,” as he was known, graduated from New Castle High School in 1965. After graduation, he served in the Army National Guard, 229th Artillery. He rose to the rank of Specialist E-4 before he was honorably discharged in 1972. He worked for many years as a conductor on the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad. Later, he worked as a master carpenter and was employed as the Maintenance Supervisor for the Americare Housing Corporation when he retired in 2019.
Al’s pride and joy was his family. He and his wife, Elaine (Iwanejko), were married on May 10, 1969. The couple raised two sons in their Mahoningtown home. Later in life, Al took great joy in his four grandchildren, attending their many sporting events and dance recitals.
Al was a man of few words. He demonstrated his love for his family through his actions, selflessly and generously tending to them. He could always be relied on for sound advice, help with home improvements and repairs, entertaining his grandchildren, acting as chauffeur, or serving in whatever capacity was needed. He was the mythical grandpa that could do anything, fix anything, take care of anything. And he did.
Al will be sorely missed by his wife, Elaine; sons, Chris (Beth) and Eric (Alyssa); four grandchildren: Emma, Carter, Aliana and Sofia DeVivo; and honorary daughter, Sabrina Herman (Jacob Wagner). Al is also survived by his brother, Ben (Teresa) DeVivo, and sister, Betty Ann DeVivo; sister-in-law, Kathie (Bob) Piccirillo and brother-in-law, Tim (Elena) Iwanejko; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Al was preceded in death by his sister, Bernadine Fulkerson; brother, Thomas DeVivo; and nephew, Shawn Fulkerson.
Al’s family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Dr. Chad Smith and the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center for the excellent care and compassion they gave to Al during his cancer treatments.
There will be no calling hours. A private Blessing Service will be officiated by Deacon John Carran of Holy Spirit Parish and memorial arrangements are being handled by the Ed & Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc.
Lord God, you are attentive to the voice of our pleading. Give Alphonso eternal rest, O Lord, and may your light shine on him forever. Let us find in your Son comfort in our sadness, certainty in our doubt, and courage to live through this hour. Make our faith strong through Christ our Lord. Amen.
