Maryann M. Galiano, 69 of 2912 Plank Road, New Castle passed away the evening of June 29, 2020 at the Grove in New Wilmington. Maryann was born February 24, 1951 in New Castle. She was the daughter of the late Stanley and Bernice (Lobazzo) Melcer. She married Richard Galiano, and celebrated 41 years. He survives at home.
Mrs. Galiano was of the Roman Catholic faith and attended Holy Spirit Parish- Mary, Mother of Hope site. Maryann was a graduate of Union Area High School. She was her class valedictorian in 1969. She continued her education earning a Bachelors’ Degree in Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1973. Later, she earned her Masters’ Degree in Education from Westminster College in 1980 as a Reading Specialist.
Maryann retired after 34 years of service in Union Area Middle/High School system. She also taught as an Adjunct Instructor at Youngstown State University for 10 years. Mrs. Galiano was a board member, volunteer, head archivist, and display coordinator at the Lawrence County Historical Society. Maryann also volunteered at the New Castle Public Library in The Children’s Department. Mrs. Galiano taught Sunday school for many years at the former Madonna School. Maryann also served as secretary for PSEA Local Union.
In addition to her husband Richard, Maryann is survived by her brother, John Melcer of New Castle; and sister-in-law, Lettie Galiano of New Castle.
Mrs. Galiano was preceded in death by parents.
Visitation will be held Thursday, July 2, 2020 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Noga Funeral Home, Inc. 1142 S. Mill Street, New Castle. A Blessing Service will be held immediately following visitation in the funeral home. Rev. Matthew Hawkins, Parochial Vicar at Holy Spirit Parish will officiate. Burial will be in Madonna Cemetery. A Memorial Mass will be scheduled at a later date.
