On Saturday, February 1st, Dr. Stephen Conti, an orthopedic surgeon, along with his wife, Carol, brought “Our Hearts to your Soles” to Lawrence County. This program is a not-for-profit organization that fits those in need with boots which are provided through the generosity of Red Wing boots. 280 people came to be fitted for boots and were also given two pairs of socks. With the boot give-away, health screenings were also performed, and a hot meal was served.
Dr. Michael Lamb, Medical Director for Catholic Charities, Dr. Kathleen Lamb, a pediatrician, along with several nurses and a social worker from Catholic Charities, estimated that 400 people visited the health fair for one issue or another. 116 cancer screenings for oral cancer, skin cancer or both were performed. Of the tests performed, there were 48 blood glucose levels tested, 56 blood pressure and heart rate screens, 60 oxygen saturation screens, and 12 ear checks for children. There were 18 cancerous or precancerous skin or oral lesions found. Three patients had advanced cases of skin cancer. Very poor mouth care was prevalent. One person, due to extremely high blood pressure, was taken to the emergency room at (UPMC) Jameson. Over 300 toothbrushes and toothpaste were given away along with infant formula, cough syrup, skin creams, nasal sprays and band aid kits. 14 nurses, a pharmacist and a dietician from the parish helped with screenings and education.
Charlane Verdi, Director of Educational Services from UPMC Jameson, provided referral information, transportation to the ER for an individual, social service assistance for medications needed, and educational information. Children’s Advocacy provided information about family services available.
Patrick Neve, Youth Minister at Holy Spirit Parish, along with college and high school students, visited with people, talked about God and prayed with folks who attended the event.
Skye, one of the high school students, said: “I enjoyed being able to talk to people going through rough times and being able to watch them enjoy themselves. It was very nice to be able to see people who are less fortunate to get a good pair of shoes. I learned there are many people in our area that want to be involved in the church.
I also learned about how many people we do not realize are in our community that are in need of basic needs we take for granted.”
Visitors were able to enjoy
a hot pasta meal and dessert prepared by Joe Mecurio and his wonderful team of volunteers. With take-outs, about 500 meals were served (25 gallons of sauce, 20 lbs of ground meat, 50 pounds of pasta! And several sheet cakes!) All in all, the event was spiritually enriching for all who attended including our over 100 volunteers.
Hopefully, as Holy Spirit Parish grows, there will be many more opportunities to put our faith into action! This is what it means to be a Catholic parish.
I am very proud and grateful to all of you.
