Edward E. "Smokey" Smolnik Sr., 86, passed away peacefully in his home on April 16, 2021, with his loving wife, children and grandchildren by his side. Edward was born on Feb. 12, 1935, in New Castle. He was the son of the late John and Zella (Boak) Smolnik. Edward was married to the former Nancy L. Schuller. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 61 years.
Mr. Smolnik was Roman Catholic and attended Holy Spirit Parish, St. Joseph the Worker site, where he served as an usher for several years. Smokey retired after 40 years of service as an ironworker with Local 207 of Youngstown, Ohio. He enjoyed his work and developed many lasting friendships. He enjoyed traveling with his grandchildren on family vacations, loved playing golf with his friends, being outdoors and helping out at the Food Bank. He was on the board of directors with the building trades at Riverside Apartments. Smokey was known for having a great sense of humor. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife. Nancy, Edward is survived by two children, daughter, Dianne C. Smolnik of New Castle; son, Edward E. (Barbara) Smolnik Jr. of New Castle; brother, John "Jack" (Kay) Smolnik of New Castle; sister, Jean Simpson of Zephyrhills, Florida; sister-in-law, Carol Smolnik; three grandchildren, Megan Smolnik, Emmaly Smolnik and Samuel Bielak, all of New Castle; nephew, Steve (Cindy) Bova of Ocean Shores, Washington: niece, Lou Ann (David) Zobrist of Las Vegas, Nevada, all of whom held a special place in his heart, along with his nephew, Sam Bova of Park City, Utah, who preceded him in death. He is also survived by several other nieces and nephews.
Mr. Smolnik was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William Smolnik; nephew, Samuel Bova; niece, Cyndi Smolnik; infant son and granddaughter, Kiley Smolnik.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, April 19, 2021, at the Noga Funeral Home Inc., 1142 Mill St. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20, 2021, at Holy Spirit Parish, St. Mary Church. The Rev. Brendan Dawson, parochial vicar of Holy Spirit Parish, will officiate. Burial will be in Castle View Memorial Gardens.
