Dolores M. Callahan, 94, formerly of New Castle, passed away peacefully with her family by her side at 9:15 a.m. at her residence in Chesapeake, Virginia on Sept. 11, 2019. Miss Callahan was born July 19, 1925, in New Castle, a daughter of the late Edward V. and Margaret C. Cosgrove Callahan.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Acker, of New Castle and her brother, Edward Callahan, of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.
Following her graduation from New Castle High School, she matriculated to Seton Hill University, graduating in 1949 with a bachelor's in secondary education, mathematical science, and a minor in history. She completed her graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin with a master's in education and mathematics. Dolores was employed as a math teacher in the Farrell High School District for several years, then was hired as a math teacher in the New Castle School District where she spent the next 40 years teaching math, algebra, calculus, trigonometry and computer science. She retired from the New Castle School District.
She has been honored by many of her students throughout the years, until her death she received many cards, phone calls and personal visits thanking her for her dedication and guidance during their schooling. All have credited her for changing their lives, believing in them and honoring her for their successes throughout their lives. Dolores was a member of St. Camillus Church for many years and most recently a new member at Prince of Peace in Chesapeake, Virginia.
Dolores is survived by her six nieces and nephews, Thomas Edward Acker and wife, Maureen, of Michigan; David H. Acker and wife, Susan, of New Castle; Peg Chakan and husband, Rod, of Chesapeake, Virginia; Kathy Acker of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; Richard Callahan of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania; and Edward Callahan and wife, Corin, also of Mechanicsburg. Also surviving are nine great-nieces and great-nephews, Mary Beth Acker Becker and husband, Michael, Rodney T. Chakan and wife, Marie; Katie Acker Schmidt and husband, Matt; Matthew Chakan; Megan Chakan Jaeger and husband, Tim; Brianna Acker Fair and husband, Zach; and Rachael Acker. She also has several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, Craig and Ryan Callahan of Mechanicsburg; Gabi, Jacob, Remi and Ava Chakan of Chesapeake; Julia and Thomas Schmidt of Pittsburgh; and Thomas Fair of Dentin, Texas.
The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of New Castle or Chesapeake, Virginia regions in her beloved dogs name, Rory, or to the Chesapeake Regional Healthcare Hospice.
A memorial Mass celebrated by Fr. Anthony Sciarappa will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, October 31, at St. Camillus Church of Holy Spirit Parish. Internment will be in St. Mary Cemetery.
